Payload Commerce

An online store you own, built on Payload and Next.js

Payload's commerce plugin covers the core loop: catalog, cart, Stripe payment and order. It leaves shipping, tax, promo codes, order email and server-side stock checks to you. We built those, tested them with Stripe test charges, and offer the result two ways.

Who it's for

Stores that have outgrown a WooCommerce or Shopify setup they can't change, and teams that want the code, the data and the hosting in their own accounts, with no platform fee on each sale.

The problem

Commerce platforms rent you a store. Payload hands you a framework instead, and its commerce plugin is still in beta: it charges the cart and records the order, and every other part of a real checkout is code someone has to write and maintain.

What's in the build

The gaps in the plugin, already filled

Catalog and variants
Products with variant options, per-variant price and stock, categories, and search and filters on the shop page, all edited in Payload's admin.
Carts, checkout and accounts
Guest and customer carts, a checkout with address entry, customer accounts with order history, and order lookup for guests by email.
Stripe payments
Payments go through your own Stripe account. Webhooks are signature-checked, and every amount is computed on the server, so a tampered cart total is ignored.
Stock enforced on the server
The cart refuses a variant that is out of stock. As shipped, the plugin only checks stock in the browser.
Shipping, tax and promo codes
Shipping methods with a free-over threshold, a tax rate, and percentage or fixed-amount promo codes validated on the server, each itemised on the order.
Order email
One order confirmation per order, sent through your own SMTP provider.
Cheap to run
Product pages are prebuilt and refreshed when a product changes, and images come straight from a CDN, so the database can sleep while nobody is shopping.

Know before you buy

What it doesn't do yet

The plugin is in beta
We pin exact Payload versions and re-test our fixes before any upgrade. If you upgrade on your own, those fixes need re-testing too.
Tax is a single rate
Location-based tax through Stripe Tax is integration work. It is not in the template.
One storefront currency
The data model holds prices in several currencies, but the storefront displays US dollars.
Promo codes are simple
One code per order. Stacking, per-product rules and usage limits are integration work.

Pricing

Two ways to start

Template

$149per year

The code, for teams with a developer.

Integration

From $500quoted per project

DBAI sets it up and fits it to your business.

  • Set up in your accounts and styled to your brand
  • Your catalog imported, including from WooCommerce
  • Fully custom API integrations: inventory, ERP, shipping carriers, CRM, tax
  • Custom pricing, quoted after a scoping call
Scope an integration

Prices are in US dollars. Hosting, payment processing and email delivery are billed to you directly by those providers.

Integration

How an integration runs

  1. 01

    SCOPE

We map your catalog, your checkout rules and the systems the store has to talk to, then send a quote.

  2. 02

    BUILD IN TEST MODE

We set the store up in your accounts, import your catalog and build the integrations against Stripe test mode first.

  3. 03

    LAUNCH AND HAND OVER

Live payments switch on when you approve. You get the admin, the code and the runbook.

Questions

Before you decide

  1. Is Payload's commerce plugin ready for a real store?

It's in beta. Our own assessment found it charges carts and records orders correctly, but leaves stock checks, shipping, tax and email to the store. This build fills those gaps. We recommend it for stores that have a developer, or DBAI, looking after it.

  2. Do you take a cut of sales?

No. Payments go through your own Stripe account, and you pay Stripe's fees directly.

  3. Where does the store run?

On Vercel, with a Neon Postgres database and Vercel Blob for images, all in accounts you own. The documentation covers setting up each one.

  4. Can you move us off WooCommerce?

Yes, as an integration. We have already imported a live WooCommerce catalog, with its variants, categories and images, through WooCommerce's public Store API.
